COVID-19 will not reduce demand for innovative life science products

Now SwedenBIO and our members are joining forces to tackle the global pandemic. If we can just get through the acute phase, there are good reasons to believe that the industry will emerge stronger. So writes Lars Adlersson, Chairman of SwedenBIO in the latest newsletter.

Now SwedenBIO and our members are joining forces to tackle the global pandemic. In the current emergency, we are working hard to secure the production of vital medicines and medical devices. At the same time, every effort is being made to keep up the momentum of all the innovative projects that can improve our health in the longer term. The potential of these projects is not affected by a virus pandemic, but we need to ensure the conditions for their continued funding. Small, cash-strapped companies are particularly vulnerable and, whatever one’s position on the principle of direct state ownership of private companies, it is now time for action and pragmatism.

If we can just get through the acute phase, there are good reasons to believe that the industry will emerge stronger. The constructive discussions that are currently taking place among regulatory authorities to facilitate the conduct of ongoing clinical trials have the potential to streamline trial activities even in more challenging times. The attention that innovative life science projects are receiving at the moment, not least the development of new diagnostics, vaccines and antiviral treatments, may create an increased interest in our companies also in the longer term. At the same time, politicians’ and regions’ understanding of the industry’s challenges has been strengthened by the ongoing dialogue between all societal actors.

Times are tough, but let’s believe that NLSDays in September can be the start of a new and even stronger era for the life science industry. The signals we receive from member companies make me confident that we will continue to deliver great work.
