There are around 1500 life science companies in Sweden, of which 800 are active in various research and development programs. The report The Swedish Drug Development Pipeline analyzes which Swedish companies are running their own drug development projects.
This year’s analysis shows, among other things:
- There are 123 companies with Swedish headquarters developing medicines.
- Of these 123 companies, 58 have projects in clinical development.
- There are 107 projects in the clinical phase, 15 more than last year.
- Oncology and CNS are the therapeutic areas with the most projects in clinical phase.
- Compared to last year, a higher proportion of clinical trials are conducted in Sweden or partly in Sweden.
- 42 of the projects in clinical phase are for indications with orphan drug designation, a doubling compared to last year.
- Nine out of ten businesses are micro-enterprises with 10 or fewer employees.
- In research and development, companies use as many consultants as they have employees.
- A majority of companies expect to increase the number of employees or consultants in the next three years.
